Oedometers

Eight classical Incremental Loading (IL) oedometers are readily available in the laboratory. Manufactured by Strassentest, they can be used to determine the one-dimensional compression modulus and the consolidation coefficient of the tested soil. Different cells are available for sample diameters of 56.4 and 71.3 mm. The latter is equipped for permeability measurements with a falling head test. The technical specifications are summarized as follows:

  • Sample diameter: 56.4 and 71.3 mm
  • Sample height: 500 mm
  • Maximum vertical stress: 4000 kPa

Continuous loading (CL) oedometers manufactured by Wille Geotechnik are also available, allowing constant rate of strain (CRS), constant rate of load (CRL), controlled gradient (CG), and creep tests to be carried out. The specimen is drained from the top platen only, with the pore pressure being measured at the bottom. The sample diameter is 50 mm, while the height ranges from 20 to 60 mm. The technical specifications are summarized as follows:

  • Sample diameter: 50
  • Sample height: 20, 40, and 60 mm
  • Maximum vertical stress: 2500 kPa
